This guide is for travelers paying merchants. It does not cover WeChat Pay processors, merchant onboarding, gateways, APIs or receiving payments as a business.

Working account

Make sure you can sign in to WeChat and access any security messages before departure.

Eligible card

Add an international card supported by the current wallet flow and your issuing bank.

Merchant route

Use Scan or your payment code for supported purchases; do not assume personal-transfer features work the same way.

Independent backup

Keep Alipay, a physical bank card or RMB cash available when an account or mini program will not cooperate.

WeChat Pay or Weixin Pay?

Travelers commonly search for WeChat Pay. Tencent's current English visitor materials use Weixin Pay for the payment service inside WeChat. This page uses both names so you can recognize the feature, but it covers one consumer task: paying for your own purchases in mainland China.

The exact menu label and location may differ by app version, language, account and region. Use the live official app rather than relying on an old screenshot.

Set up Weixin Pay inside WeChat

  1. Install or update WeChat from the official app-store listing and confirm the publisher.
  2. Create an account or sign in with a phone number you can still access while traveling.
  3. Open the wallet or payment area shown for your current account; labels can vary.
  4. Add an eligible international debit or credit card using the live card-linking flow.
  5. Complete the identity, card and issuing-bank checks requested on screen.
  6. Find both Scan and the payment-code screen before your first checkout.

Tencent says overseas users can register with an overseas mobile number and link eligible international cards. That does not guarantee every feature or transaction: account status, merchant category, amount, network and issuer decisions still apply.

Pay a merchant with Weixin Pay

At a supported checkout, either scan the merchant's collection code inside WeChat or show your payment code for the cashier to scan. Review the merchant name, amount, selected card and any current notice before approving the payment.

A merchant purchase is not the same as sending money to a person, adding wallet balance or using a red packet. An international card may work for an eligible purchase while other wallet features remain unavailable.

Mini-program checkout is a separate layer

Restaurants, attractions, transport and other services may open a WeChat mini program before payment. In that situation, the first QR can open a menu, order or service page rather than charge your card. Complete only the fields needed for the purchase and review the final Weixin Pay confirmation separately.

Mini-program availability, language and account requirements vary. If a flow asks for information or permissions you do not understand, stop and ask staff for a staffed checkout, another wallet, a physical card or cash.

Fix common WeChat Pay failures

You cannot find the payment area

Update the official app and confirm that you are signed in to the expected account. Menus can differ by account and region. Use Tencent's current visitor guidance or official support rather than changing identity or region details at random.

The card will not link

Check that your entered details match the card, complete any identity check and confirm that the issuer permits overseas digital-wallet transactions. Contact the bank or try a different eligible card if the same decision repeats.

The QR opens chat, a menu or a transfer

That code is not necessarily the merchant-payment step. Ask the cashier whether you should scan a collection code or show your payment code.

The purchase is declined or remains unclear

Check mobile data, account messages and the selected card. Read any current fee, limit or eligibility notice in the app. Do not pay twice while the result is uncertain—check transaction history and ask the merchant whether payment arrived.

Never share your password, one-time code or full card details with a merchant or unofficial account helper.

Keep another route ready

Alipay is a useful second mobile wallet for many visitors. Also carry a physical card and RMB cash so a WeChat account, mini program, linked card or data problem does not become a first-day emergency.

WeChat Pay for foreigners: common questions

Can I register with a non-Chinese phone number?

Tencent's official visitor guidance says overseas users can register with an overseas mobile number. Account checks still depend on the current app and the details you provide.

Do I need a Chinese bank account?

Eligible visitors can add eligible international cards through the supported visitor flow. Check the live app and your issuing bank for current availability.

Will every WeChat mini program accept my linked card?

Do not assume so. A card may work for supported merchant payments while a particular mini program, service or non-purchase feature has different requirements.

Where can I check current cards, fees, limits or promotions?

Use the live WeChat app, Tencent's official visitor information and your card issuer. Treat dated promotions and screenshots as temporary.
